Sameer: I'm on a plane to DC. Name the date. :D

Cassandra: It was delicious haul! I don't live far enough east to have a good handle on the markets there, but will ask around.

Ben: Well. Sameer, being the good man he is, just smiled and nodded at my slight miscommunication with the vendor (and not anything language-barrier induced, either). I heard one pound - as opposed to one kilo (entirely reasonable) - and watched incredulously as she dumped a whole carton of figs into a bag. I was too stunned, and Sameer too polite, to say anything. ;) Thankfully, they were delicious.

How does one accidentally buy a kilo of figs?

Yes, I did see that sentence and skip directly to commenting.... I'll go back and read the rest of the post now.

I love farmer's markets! Haven't been to one in a quite a while, though. Looks like you got quite the delicious haul!

I'm moving back to Toronto on the long weekend ... do you know of any decent markets in The Beach? My new apartment is at Queen & Woodbine.

Sure, it was a kilo of figs. But they were ripe, juicy, fleshy, tasty figs. You really can't go wrong with that, right?

I feel the same way about the Court House market that sets up shop a few blocks away from my apartment every Saturday from 8am-noon. It's a producer-only market where you'll not only find fresh goods and lovely smiles, but where they take care in educating the consumers on what's on sale and how exactly they've been grown. I've been known to spend my whole morning there on Saturdays.

Added bonus: an antique market sets up right next door starting at 10am, so you can get lost in vintage magazines, bottle collections, and pretty restored bicycles after you're done buying your spinach, arugula, and watercress. (My staple purchases every week.)

More info on the Court House market:

(Is that enough to entice you to come visit now? Hehe.)
